Chinglish began previews October 11 and opened October 27, 2011 at Broadway’s Longacre Theater, New York City. For this production I was brought on by the director to be a special consultant to the design team and also to design and animate the moment at the end of the show where hundreds of Chinese letterforms fill the space and then disappear into the curtain.

Press

“A series of jaw-dropping projections by Daniel Brodie combine with Twist’s puppets to enhance Arias’ transformations into a Hindu goddess and a tentacled sea creature.”

-Backstage

“…Daniel Brodie’s new projections on a stage-wide scrim stand out. The mushroom-induced trip is particularly beautiful: Arias writhes on a black box against a black background, looking as if he’s floating in space, surrounded by gorgeous swirling graphics.”

-NY Post

“The combined effect of the puppets, the intricate handmade sets, and an amazing array of light projections creates an unreal, visually dazzling display. If you scoff at the phrase “stage magic,” check out the scene where Arias dances with two six-foot devils, eyes glowing red between hits of poppers; a billowing backdrop and projected flames against a sheer curtain transform this simple scene into a rollicking fever dance.”

-capitalnewyork.com

“However, any semblance of a story is merely an excuse for Twist to create one spectacular design after another. He’s aided in this by projections from Daniel Brodie that seem even more effective at the Abrons than they were at HERE. Of particular note are the visuals accompanying Arias’ drug-induced headtrip.”

-TheaterMania

“Particularly wonderful is a drug trip, the intense beauty of which would not have been possible without Daniel Brodie’s projections of smoke, fire and mandalas (he also knocks it out of the park with a galaxy of stars).”

It plays one night only, Friday, February 4 2011 at the Palmer Auditorium.

Prophets of Funk celebrates the groundbreaking, visceral and powerful music of Sly and the Family Stone, a funk and soul band from the 1960s and ‘70s. An innovative, radically humanistic, movement-based performance, “Prophets of Funk” will inspire dialogue and leave viewers wanting more of its kinetic feast.

I’m doing a giant projection installation with Basil Twist for the New York City Halloween Parade this Sunday evening around 7:30pm. Look for it all night at the Gothic Clock tower of The Jefferson Market Library at 10th St and 6th Ave.

Upon the 15th anniversary of the giant spider in the Village Halloween Parade, instead of the arachnid normally perched atop the Gothic Clock tower of The Jefferson Market Library, a special one night only installation will trick or treat the public this year. While the historic library goes under a façade renovation, This years video specter puppet serves, like the traditional marionette spider always has, as a visual treat for those participating in the Parade as well as those lined near the Library who can witness it’s annual anticipated appearance.

Giant outdoor projection designed by Daniel Brodie

Curated by Basil Twist

Projection equipment provided by Scharff-Weisberg, Inc

Daniel Brodie is a freelance projection designer and multimedia artist based in Brooklyn, NY. His previous collaborations with Basil Twist include Behind the Lid, and the world famous Arias with a Twist. Recently he also has contributed projection design work to Broadway’s The Pee-wee Herman Show, Elf, Lombardi, Sondheim on Sondheim, and Rock of Ages.

The great thing about this projector is that by using the “intensity” setting over DMX, we could build fade-ins and outs that match the lighting perfectly and have no visual interference like a douser swooping in or an iris closing. Those are fine effects to have in the arsenal, but fade-outs are much more important.
